Sump Aquarium Filtration
In sump aquarium filtration, BioBall is an equipment that provides both biological and mechanical filtration during the water flow process. This plastic material performs filtration by breaking up the water through its channels and holes, and its large surface area creates an ideal environment for the settlement of aerobic nitrifying bacteria.
BioBall is designed in a spherical shape, with its surface area expanded to support the formation of aerobic bacteria. Water passing over these spheres becomes enriched with oxygen, accelerating the growth of aerobic bacteria. These bacteria play a crucial role in the conversion of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
The erosion surfaces created on the inner surfaces of BioBalls enhance the effectiveness of biological filtration. Additionally, the choice of raw materials is crucial; BioBalls made from recycled raw materials may lead to negative consequences over time due to the waste they may contain. Therefore, BioBalls are stabilized with metallic coloring, and the inorganic additives used accelerate biological interaction.
16 BioBalls occupy approximately 1 liter of volume and have 30% more surface area compared to standard BioBalls. Therefore, when calculating the area, the effective surface area should be considered as double. 33 units of 32 mm BioBalls occupy approximately 1 decimeter (desi) of volume, and the surface area of each BioBall is calculated as 200 cm².
